Introduction
Recent tragic events which have resulted in deaths caused by Carbon Monoxide in Ireland have highlighted the dangers posed by this lethal gas. The aim of this feature is to educate you on carbon monoxide, how to detect its presence in your home and how to ensure the safety of your family.
What is Carbon Monoxide?
Carbon monoxide (CO), often reffered to as “The Silent killer”, is a poisonous, colourless, odourless, and tasteless gas. Although it has no detectable odour, CO is often mixed with other gases that do have an odour. So, you can inhale carbon monoxide right along with gases that you can smell and not even know that CO is present.
CO is a common hazard resulting from the incomplete burning of natural gas and any other material containing carbon such as gasoline, kerosene, oil, propane, coal, or wood.
It is only when the fuel does not burn properly that excess CO is produced, which is poisonous. When CO enters the body, it prevents the blood from bringing oxygen to cells, tissues, and organs.
In the home, the majority of CO poisoning is caused by appliances and flues that have not been properly installed, maintained or that are poorly ventilated.
