Garden Equipment/Machinery

Choosing a Lawn Mower

Lawn Mower
There are various different types of mower to choose from. There are four main types; Cylinder, Hover, Rotary and Ride on. There are many factors you should consider. Probably the most important factor is the size of your lawn. An electrically powered mower will not be suitable for a large lawn. Also consider the factors below (some are indirectly linked to the size of your lawn). These include:
  1. How often you will cut your lawn?
  2. Do you want stripes on your lawn?
  3. Petrol or electric powered?
  4. Portability - how large or heavy is the mower?
  5. Ease of use?
  6. How much do you want to spend?
  7. How safe is the mower?

Cylinder Lawnmowers

Cylinder Mower
You cannot do much better than buy a good cylinder lawn mower as that is the best type of lawn mower to cut your lawn with. A rotary lawnmower just cannot produce the quality of cut grass. With a cylinder lawnmower, as the lawn mower goes forward, either pushed by you or under its own propulsion, a horizontally mounted cylinder rotates with a series of cutting blades on its surface trimming the grass to the desired height. As in most areas of life, you get what you pay for and the main disadvantage of a cylinder lawnmower is the cost. However, you should be able to find a basic electric cylinder mower costing you around €100 and with a bit of work should give you the stripes on your lawn you have always wanted.

Rotary Lawnmowers

Rotary Mower
A rotary lawnmower cuts the grass using a rotating blade. This blade hacks at the grass and does not produce as good a cut as a cylinder lawnmower. However, a rotary lawn mower will do a good a job and it will do an even better job if it has a roller on the back. Rotary lawn mowers will easily cut your grass at the first cut of the Spring when its a little too long. In terms of price, rotary lawnmowers are considerably cheaper than cylinder lawnmowers, in both petrol and electric models.

Hover Lawnmowers

Hover Mower
If you are looking for a very easy to push lawnmower and a very reasonably priced lawnmower, a hover mower could be for you. The cutting method is the same as for a rotary lawn mower. The main difference is in the design of the skirt that surrounds the cutting blade. The rotation of the blades creates a down draft and the escaping air lifts the whole of the lawn mower off the grass surface so that it floats above it. You can mow from side-to-side with a hover lawnmower rather than forward and backwards if you wish.

Ride-on Mowers

Ride-on
You will need to consider a ride-on tractor lawnmower if you are considering cutting larger areas. If you need to cut long grass in paddocks and orchards even in the wet. They can mulch, tow and drive powered accessories.

Quick Tips - buying a lawnmower

  1. Work out the size of your garden
  2. Draw a rough plan and highlight obstacles
  3. Note the terrain, banking, uneven surfaces
  4. Distances of garden from power supply
  5. Access width of gates or access points
  6. Size of garden shed or garage for the machine
  7. Distance to the tip or compost heap
  8. Establish the finish such as stripes
  9. Who will use the mower?
  10. What is your budget?
  11. Do you have a machine to trade in?
  12. How long to you expect it to last?

Hedge Trimmers

Hedge Trimmer
Garden hedge trimmers come in a variety of different models from petrol driven trimmers to battery operated and mains operated trimmers. Add to this telescopic and the long reach varieties and you can soon start to become unsure which hedge trimmer is the right choice.

Mains Hedge Cutters

The most popular type of garden hedge trimmer is one that is mains powered. These operate by an extension cord from the nearest electricity supply. They are usually lighter than other types of hedge cutter as there is no heavy battery pack or fuel tank so can be easier to use.

Cordless Hedge Trimmers

Cordless hedge cutters are usually powered by a rechargeable battery pack and provide the convenience of not having a cord to deal with. They are useful for medium sized to larger gardens and are good for getting to awkward locations where electrical power is not easily available.

Petrol Hedge Trimmers

Petrol hedge cutters are useful for larger gardens or countryside hedges and shrubs where a rechargeable battery powered trimmer may not be suitable and there is no electricity nearby for a mains trimmer. Look at the overall weight of the trimmer as it's likely you'll be carrying it around alot so a heavier model could soon become tiresome.

Telescopic Hedge Cutters

A garden hedge trimmer can potentially be a dangerous piece of equipment so combining it with a ladder or climbing equipment can sometimes lead to injury. Telescopic hedge trimmers are ideal for taller hedges and shrubs as the long extending handle enables the operator to reach up without the need to climb. If you have tall hedges or shrubs then a telescopic hedge cutter is what you may need.

Strimmers

Strimmer
Strimmers (or line trimmers) utilize a spinning nylon cord to trim grass and vegetation around borders and other tight spaces that cannot be easily reached with a lawn mower. Some strimmers are fitted with two nylon cords for better performance. The cord is contained in a spool within the strimmer head and can be fed out as the cord wears. Some models do this automatically. Eventually, you will need to purchase a new spool of cord.

When choosing a strimmer, consider the size of the swathe head, i.e. the width of the cutting area. Smaller cutting swathes are more suitable for confined areas.

Electric and battery cordless strimmers

For most gardens, an electric strimmer is perfectly adequate. They are lightweight and quiet. However, unless you opt for a battery powered cordless strimmer the power cord will restrict movement in larger gardens.

Petrol powered strimmers

For heavier work, or clearing large areas, a petrol driven strimmer or brush cutter is more suitable. In addition to nylon cord, many can be fitted with different metal blades for tackling brambles, brush and small trees.

Multi purpose models can serve as hedge cutters, pruners, soil tillers and power brooms through the addition of various attachments. If you have a large garden to maintain, these models make perfect sense as you only need one engine to power a range of tools.

For really tough growth, consider a wheeled trimmer or a field and brush mower.

Always wear eye protection when using strimmers.

Strimmer Budget

Generally speaking, you shouldn’t have to invest excessively to purchase a quality strimmer. However, make sure that you purchase a durable device that will last a good few years (especially if you’ll rely on the device regularly for maintaining your garden).

Choosing the right strimmer for your particular task requires some comparing of models and types. However, if you shop around, you should have no problem finding a device that can power through the tasks you have with ease.

Chainsaws

Chainsaw
A Chain saw should last you for a good many years if you by a high quality machine in the first place, and look after it. The chain saw should also be right for the tasks you will ask of it during its lifetime of tree felling and tree surgery. Its not only tree surgeons that need chain saws.

For light gardening use select a chain saw that is small and light. It will prove much easier to use for branch cutting or tree felling. The guide bar; this is the grooved elliptical bar around which the chain runs, need not be longer than 18 inches. The larger chain saws are really intended for professional tree or forestry work.

A smaller bar chain saw is much more maneuverable and less likely to get its nose (the end of the chain saw) caught up whilst in use, and dirty in the ground. Don't forget not all chain saw use will be straight forward tree felling. Removal of awkward branches, tree felling in awkward positions and other difficult situations make smaller chain saws an advantage for amateur tree surgery.

For home tree surgery there will be a choice of an electric chain saw of a petrol chain saw. The major disadvantage of and electric chain saw is, of course the cable that will follow you around. The Petrol chain saw does not have this disadvantage, and depending on the model will probably deliver more power.

Whilst choosing your chain saw, you should also remember that a shorter bar has to drives the chain a shorter distance. The chains saw will therefore have increased power. Most reputable brands produce a wide of chain saw length (they can be anything between 13 and 28 inches.

Tillers

Tiller
One of the most functional pieces of garden equipment, the garden tiller will loosen your garden soil expertly. The tiller's engine powers rotating blades, or tines, making your soil loose and fluffy, ready for planting. It can also chop up plant debris and mix it into the soil. Incorporating organic matter and manure into the garden is easily accomplished with this useful piece of garden equipment. The ability of your garden equipment to do these jobs effectively is a function of its weight, strength, design, and type of tines, as well as the type of soil you are working with your garden equipment.

A heavy powerful garden tiller is a most effective piece of garden equipment for stony, clay soils, while in a small garden or one with light soil, smaller tiller is a more appropriate piece of garden equipment.

Rear-tined tillers is garden equipment generally better able to self-propel on all but the rockiest soils. They travel straight and can produce a footprint-free seedbed.

Front-tined tillers work well as small garden equipment. They are usually light in weight, but may require considerable strength to guide them through the soil.

A tiller is a major lawn care investment. Features to look for include heavy cast-iron, steel plate and tubing, heavy bearings, strong welds used in construction, and easily operable controls.
